What’s the difference between home hair color kits and a professional hair color in a salon?

A lot. You’ll get more choices with professional hair colors and greater variety in the strength of developers. Home hair color kits are aimed more at covering gray hair and only offer one or two levels of lightening. If you’re a brunette who wants to be a blonde, for example, that would  usually require about 5 levels of lightening.

The money you pay a professional stylist is payment for his or her time, expertise in application, and knowledge of style. You never question on how much you have to pay your Dentist and/or your Physcian  so why skimp on your hair… it is your biggest accessory !

How often can I color my hair?

Hair color maintenance depends upon several things:

TEMPORARY

Temporary hair color merely stains the hair shaft. It doesn’t need hydrogen peroxide to fully develop, but it usually has an alkalizing agent and can build up over time with repeated applications.

Temporary hair color is sometimes referred to as a “try-me” because of its inability to actually change the hair structure and penetrate into the shaft of your hair. Used properly, this color can be a one-shot application. But if you like what you see, wait at least 4-6 weeks before reapplying to avoid a flat or muddy non-reflective color buildup.

SEMI-PERMANENT

Semi-permanent hair color needs hydrogen peroxide to activate color molecules and to help any alkalizing agent(s) in adhering color to the hair shaft. These colors are usually not strong enough to decolorize natural pigment.

As with temporary color, it’s preferable to wait 4-6 weeks to reapply; however, it’s equally important to only touch up any out growth.

PERMANENT

Permanent hair color isn’t a 4-(well, 9) letter-word! When done properly & most importantly by a proffesional stylist, your hair reallydoes not  suffer any great damage and, in fact, is absolutely necessary if you want to lighten your natural color or cover white/gray hair. Regrowth on your roots can show up any where from 2-4 weeks depending on how many levels your lifting or depositing.

The presence of ammonia in permanent hair color creates an even more alkaline environment. This opens and swells the hair shaft, decolorizes natural pigment, and oxidizes artificial pigment, allowing that pigment to attach and become “permanent”.

HIGHLIGHTS

Highlights are probably the most popular color service we see in our salon today. They can be applied with either hair color or bleach, and by weaving color in with foils or paper, or by pulling hair  through a cap, or by freehand painting techniques.

Maintenance for highlights depends on how different the color is from your natural level and on how heavy you you want  highlights  to be.

Thin, scattered highlights placed strategically in the hair need only be touched up when youdecide. Our Stylist usally tell thier clients, “when you feel the need for a little pick-me-up, call me”. Heavier, lighter highlights (often considered “chunky”) demand more frequent attention, usually within 6 weeks.

Should you wash your hair every day?

It’s not bad, but it’s better to let the natural oils of your scalp produce & replenish your hair every so often. This reduces split ends and dry, frizzy hair. Try washing every other day, or if you need to wash every day, try just using a moisturising shampoo or you could try just shampooing the roots and not the ends, because the ends are the driest part of your hair. (Aquage Hydrating shampoo is excellent for all types of hair)

Great question Shannon,

Wedding Manicure Tips

It is a must you begin to take better care of your hands the moment he proposes, because they are in the spotlight from that moment on & especially on your wedding day. On this day everyone wants to see “the ring,” and you would also want them to look at nice well done nails and pretty hands. So planning ahead is very important so that your hands look dazzling on your big day. Not to mention when you  accidentally run into his old flame and it is then …all of the sudden that you must brush something off your cheek ever so slowly just to make sure it is seen & noted “Game Over ” He’s yours!

Get a Professional Manicure: In case you want to keep the nails natural, you should schedule a professional manicure a few months before your wedding. Setting aside an hour once or twice a month to pamper your hands will give you a good feel about yourself. This kind of treatment of the nails will help them grow stronger and look nicer.

The Elegant Look:  All your nails should be very clean and shaped perfectly. The classic way nails are polished  for a wedding is using white and then the entire nail is painted with a soft, clear pink top coat.

Amazing Nail Enhancements: If for some reason you are not able to grow your own nails, an acrylic set of nails are the way to go. My personal favorite is the Pink & Whites!

At Reve our Nail Enhancements are available in: Acrylic, Fiberglass, Gel & Silk.

Congratulations & We hope to be a part of making your Wedding Day Dreams come true,

Choosing the Right Celebrity Hairstyles for You

With so many celebrity hairstyles to choose from it can be confusing when you try to figure out which one is right for your face shape. With any hairstyle you should always take your face shape into consideration to ensure your style compliments your features. Here’s a quick guide to choosing the right hairstyle.Round faces need to add length to their styles to counter balance their face’s shape. Kelly Clarkson’s celebrity  hairstyle is a perfect match for this type of face. Your hair should be longer than chin length and sleek with an off center or dramatic side part. Avoid adding a lot of volume to the sides of your hairstyle. Keep the style smooth and sleek and you’ll be looking like a celebrity yourself.

Heart or triangular face shapes are recognized by their wide foreheads and narrow chins. To camouflage these characteristics, try celebrity hairstyles such as Nicole Richie’s sophisticated bob. Your bangs should be long and wispy and the length of your hairstyle should sit chin length or slightly longer with razored ends for volume. Flat iron all of your hair straight and sweep your bangs to one side, covering up your wide forehead. Aim for added volume at the bottom of your hair to counteract your narrow chin.

Those with a square face will do best with a celebrity hairstyle like Jennifer Aniston’s famous style. This long, sleek style hugs the sides of the face and covers up a square jaw. The hair should be shoulder length or longer for the best effect. With this and all hairstyles, be sure to keep the style frizz-free with anti-frizz products. Try a smoothing serum with added silicone for frizz-busting and shine-enhancing results.

#1 Celebrity Haircutt for Summer 2009!

Ah celebrities; we love them, we hate them, but deep down inside we want to be them…or maybe at least look like them.

Katie Holmes has always been the cute girl next door. However after she hooked up with Tom Cruise, her fame skyrocketed, not only because of Suri, but because she got her hair cut into a bob.

Now bobs don’t work for everyone, but for Katie Holmes, the look seems to compliment her quite well. It’s sophisticated, and made her appear more mature.

It’s retro, it’s stylish, and Katie brought this style back.

Her celebutot Suri also sports the same cut, and since Suri has sported this cut, mothers around the globe have been trying to mimic the toddlers attractive locks by giving their own children the bob cut.

Can you blame them though? Suri  is adorable. Like momma, like baby. The duo are simply breathtaking.

Cheers to Hot Mama’s around the World,

How To Avoid Split Ends

Ahhh the agony of split ends! Your hair’s worst enemy. Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do to repair your damaged hair once you have split ends. The only effective way to rid your hair of split ends is to have them cut off.

Once you get your hair cut and all the split ends removed, do not ignore your hair! You should trim your hair about every six weeks to prevent split ends returning.

A lot of women think the length of their hair is more important then their split ends… “I’m trying to grow my hair… If I skip my next trim my hair will grow longer, faster!”

WRONG! Do not ignore your split ends, because once they are there, they will only get worse. The longer you leave them, the further they will climb up the hair shaft. When you finally go for a trim, you will have no choice by to chop off even MORE of your hair!

Thank you for the Question, hope to see you soon at Reve,

How can I get Eva Longoria’s long layered look?

EvaMs. Longoria’s hair is a classic ‘long-layered cut’ (also called a shag cut) that has been followed up with razor texturing to soften the hair and define the layering. The hair is also highlighted in a manner designed to emphasize the layering. It is also a good idea to take a picture in with you and show your stylist!

Thank you,

Are Spiral Perms Still In?

Well, as styles come and go, it’s best to stick with the “elements of style” that define a given period, and use the basics that A) you like and B) look good on you. Too many women get bogged down in the idea that they have to have the current “trendy” hairstyle, even to the point of selecting a style that doesn’t suit them.

However, I would hope that you have a hairstylist that you feel good about, and with whom you can discuss what you would like to accomplish. He/she can help you adapt your spiral perm into a style that you will love, and one that will not look dated. Stop in & receive a complimentary consultation, we would love to help!

What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an effective, non-surgical way to get rid of acne scars, fine wrinkles and sunspots by exfoliating the top layers of the skin. No chemicals or laser beams are used, only aluminum oxide micro crystals that gently sandblasts your skin, leaving it smooth and fresh. Micro dermabrasion also stimulates collagen production, helping your skin rejuvenate faster than normal.
